Immunodeficiency: Trapping the nude mouse gene
نویسنده
چکیده
Hairless nude mice are immunodeficient because they lack a thymus. The nude gene has now been identified; it encodes a winged-helix transcription factor that is expressed specifically in skin and thymus.

O-1: Effects of Recipient Mouse Strain, Sex and Gonadal Status on the Outcome of TestisTissue Xenografting
Background: The aim of the present study was to examine factors that may affect the outcome of testis tissue xenografting. Recipient factors were examined by grafting small fragments of testis tissue from newborn piglets under the back skin of immunodeficient mice of different strains [severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) vs. nude), sex (male vs. female) and gonadal status (intact vs. gonade...
متن کاملInsights on Foxn1 Biological Significance and Usages of the “Nude” Mouse in Studies of T-Lymphopoiesis
Mutation in the "nude" gene, i.e. the FoxN1 gene, induces a hairless phenotype and a rudimentary thymus gland in mice (nude mouse) and humans (T-cell related primary immunodeficiency). Conventional FoxN1 gene knockout and transgenic mouse models have been generated for studies of FoxN1 gene function related to skin and immune diseases, and for cancer models. It appeared that FoxN1's role was fu...
متن کاملTumorigenicity of Esophageal Cancer Stem Cells (ECSCs) in nude mouse xenograft model
Background and objectives: Modeling cancer in vivo is a very important tool to investigate cancer pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer progression. Laboratory mice are the most common animal used for rebuilding human cancer in vivo. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are the main reason of failure in cancer therapy because of tumor relapse and metastasis. Isolation of cancer stem cell...
متن کاملVascularization of corneas of hairless mutant mice.
During the course of experiments examining the immunobiology of corneal transplants, the corneas of athymic, nude mice (nu/nu) were found to contain blood vessels that extended through the entire superficial stroma into the centermost portion of the cornea. The presence of corneal vessels was not related to the immunodeficient condition of the nude mouse since corneas from the severe combined i...
متن کاملExploitation of gene knockout mice models to study the pathogenesis of leprosy.
Shepard's technique for growth of Mycobacterium leprae in the mouse footpad, described in 1960, and more recent studies in thymectomized-irradiated mice and rats, athymic nude mice, nude rats and severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice have defined the role of T-cell mediated immunity (CMI) in leprosy. However, the normal mouse and the immunocompromised mouse and rat represent only element...
